LASI 170 Introduction to Library Research

Where do student comments come from?

Each class has an optional course evaluation extra-credit assignment. Student comments found on this web guide come from course evaluations. Not all students leave a comment. The course evaluation was initially created in Survey Monkey. Qualtrics has been used since fall 2022.

Questions on the course evaluation are a mix of ranking and short answer. The verbiage on these questions changes a bit every few years as the instructor considers new assignments and evaluates what feedback is desired, but the topics covered in the course evaluation are basically the same each semester. Comments are original and retain all grammar, spelling and punctuation mistakes. Below is a summary of the questions.

Section 1: Online Design
  • Are the lessons well organized and easy to follow? Do you feel you had the technological skills necessary to independently complete the assignments? Are the online tools adequate and appropriate for the assignments? Is the Discussion Board a useful learning experience?
  • Comment on the course design.
Section 2: Collaboration
  • Are there opportunities to interact with your fellow students and the instructor? Did communication with other students contribute to your learning experience?
  • Comment about communication and collaboration.
Section 3: Coursework and Course Objectives

Course Learning Objectives (included in the evaluation for students to refer to)

  1. Select relevant and appropriate information sources for a topic.
  2. Construct an effective search strategy in order to find information on a topic.
  3. Synthesize and analyze information from different sources in order to create an outline for a research project.
  4. Identify the parts of a citation and write a list of references in a recognized citation style.
  • Were course objectives clear? Were quizzes, discussion board forums and readings relevant to the course objectives? Were you intellectually challenged?
  • Are you confident in your ability to find relevant articles in SmartSearch and in a library database? Can you synthesize and analyze information from different sources to create an outline for a research project? Can you create a list of citations or a bibliography page in either MLA or APA style?
