"Banned Books Week 2018 is September 23-29. It brings together the entire book community — librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular. The books featured during Banned Books Week have all been targeted with removal or restricted in libraries and schools. By focusing on efforts across the country to remove or restrict access to books, Banned Books Week draws national attention to the harms of censorship." - http://www.ala.org/advocacy/bbooks/banned

"THE GREAT AMERICAN READ is an eight-part series that explores and
celebrates the power of reading, told through the prism of America’s 100
best-loved novels (as chosen in a national survey)*. It investigates how and
why writers create their fictional worlds, how we as readers are affected by
these stories, and what these 100 different books have to say about our
diverse nation and our shared human experience.
The television series features entertaining and informative documentary
segments, with compelling testimonials from celebrities, authors, notable
Americans and book lovers across the country. It is comprised of a two-hour
launch episode in which the list of 100 books is revealed, five one-hour theme episodes that examine concepts common to groups of books on the list, and a finale, in which the results are announced of a nationwide vote to choose America’s best-loved book.
The series is the centerpiece of an ambitious multi-platform digital, educational and community outreach campaign, designed to get the country reading and passionately talking about books.
*PBS does not endorse any titles on the top 100 list. For more information on how these titles were selected, please see our FAQs below." - Great American Reads website (https://www.pbs.org/the-great-american-read/about/show/)

February is Black History Month, as has been designated by every U.S. president since
1976. The event grew out of "Negro History Week," which was spearheaded by historian
Carter G.Woodson and other prominent African-Americans. This annual celebration is in
honor of the achievements of African-Americans and is a time to reflect on and
recognize the central role of African-Americans in American history.
Black History is more than a month, but Black History Month can serve as a time to
especially educate one's self and honor the black history of America. Books and movies
featured in this display are written and/or directed by African-Americans and can be
checked out at the Circulation Desk.
Dates: February 2, 2018 to March 2, 2018. This exhibit was made by Madison
