March Madness

March Madness is one of the biggest, most exciting and fun events in
all of sports. The NCAA Division I tournament is a single-elimination
tournament of 68 teams that compete in seven rounds for the
national championship. The penultimate round is known as the Final
Four, when (you guessed it) only four teams are left.

Women's Basketball (facts and records)

  • The Fairmount College women’s basketball team was the first in this sport to represent our school. The first game was January 6, 1906.  Fairmount lost 13-16 to Wichita High School.  Fairmount went 5-2 in that first year of competition and outscored opponents 135-91.  The men’s team played its first game 25 days later on January 31, 1906, losing to Washburn.

  • The first games were played in the basement of Fairmount Hall.  (Constructed in 1887, Fairmount Hall housed classrooms, offices and chapel for Fairmount College and the University of Wichita until it was destroyed by fire in 1929. It was located just northeast of intersection of North Hillside and East 17th streets. It faced Hillside Street.)

  • Wichita State celebrated the 100th anniversary of women’s basketball in 2006.

  • The women’s basketball program was discontinued in the 1918-1919 school year.  The hiatus lasted 51 years!

  • Over 50 years later in Fall 1969, female students were asked to sign up for intercollegiate competition in several sports. Ads recruiting players were placed in the Sunflower.

  • Coach Sue Bair led the first team in 1969.

  • Jody Adams is the school’s all-time winningest women’s basketball coach with a record of 161-115 (.583) in nine seasons (2008-2017).

  • From 2012-13 to 2014-15, the Shockers won three straight conference titles and earned the first three NCAA Tournament bids in school history.

  • In 2014-15, Wichita State set a school record for wins in a single season with 29 (29-5) and compiled a 17-1 mark in the Missouri Valley Conference.
