You can browse through the top levels of the Library of Congress Classification System as presented in Wikipedia.
- History books are usually, but not always, in C, D, E and F. Find the subcategory you want to explore--for example, DQ--then look for call numbers starting with DQ in the library stacks (shelves).
- A thorough explanation of how call numbers work (UC Berkeley).
- Find out what floor your book is on (library floor map).
Another strategy: once you've found a book on your topic in the library catalog (click for example), look on the shelves nearby.

Enter keyword(s) and click search.
When you find a book you want, look for the blue button called Request Item Through Interlibrary Loan.
This will take you to the Interlibrary Loan (ILL) page where you can log in with your WSU ID.
- You will only need to fill out your contact information the first time.
- The next form should be filled out for you with the book's info.
- Submit your request and you will get an email when the book is ready to be picked up at the library.

A growing partnership of over 70 libraries and research institutions, primarily university libraries, pooling their resources to create a digital library. The primary goals are long-term preservation of fragile collections, along with methods for making these records more readily accessible while still respecting in-copyright works. While WSU faculty, staff, and students can search across the entire digital library, they have full-text access to only the items in the Public Collections.
