What Your Librarian Can Do For You

Angela Paul selfie As your Women's Studies liaison, there are several ways I can assist with your instruction and research:

Library Instruction: Schedule time with me for a class visit. I can come to your classroom, or you may bring your class to Ablah Library. Read more about this in the next tab.
Embed a Librarian: Add me to your class in Blackboard to facilitate communication with your students and to help with library access in BB. As the primary instructor for LASI 170 Introduction to Library Research, I might be able to help with other aspects of BB as well. A tab for this topic has also been created.
Consultation: I can help students, faculty and others discover research materials. We can meet in person, Skype or phone. You may also use our Ask-a-Librarian reference service.
Acquisitions: WEIS has a library budget! Please recommend books, videos, and other library materials for the library collection. Students, faculty and others may recommend purchases. Priority is given to materials that will help the most researchers. See the Women's Studies Collection Development Policy for details.

Here are some of the topics I can cover. Many of these can be covered in one session, although multiple sessions can help keep students on task. Let me know if you think of other topics!

Defining a topic and creating a fully developed research question
Identifying and evaluating various types of sources, including scholarly/academic journal articles and primary sources
Search strategies for locating articles, books and other library sources in library databases
Citing sources in MLA or APA style
Avoiding plagiarism

This page about embedding librarians in Blackboard provides instructions about how to add someone to your class. Adding me to your class will provide your students with an easy way to contact me. I can also monitor relevant forums in the discussion board and chime in when students have questions about using library resources.

Please make sure you have a good link to videos each semester. See this page about embedding videos or this one about linking with a persistent URL on the Video/Audio Resources page for details. You can also embed me in your BB class and I will be happy to check and update links.
