Finding Scholarly Articles

Use the following databases to help you find citations to articles from scholarly journals. When using a database, limit your search to "peer reviewed" or "refereed" or "scholarly journals", if possible, so that your search results will include only citations from scholarly journals. Most databases allow you to limit your results to scholarly journals. Some databases such as Anthropology Plus and JSTOR are made up entirely of scholarly journals, so limiting your search is not necessary.

Do a keyword search in one of the databases below. Examples of keyword search statements:

               shaman* and ritual*
               voodo* and
(death or ancestor*)
veil* and (muslim or islam*) and (women or female)
               kabana and (sorcery or witchcraft)

Verifying Articles are from Scholarly Journals

If you are wondering about a specific journal, use the Ulrichsweb.com  database to confirm that a journal is refereed (scholarly) by looking up a journal and checking for Refereed icon   (Refereed).

Click on the last tab to the left --"Magazine or Journal: How Do You Tell?", for information on the differences between popular magazines and scholarly journals. If you still have questions about a journal, contact the instructor or librarian for this class.
