Embedding Videos in Blackboard

Each video in Academic Video Online and other Alexander Street Press video packages has an embed code that can be posted in Blackboard so students can easily access the video from on- and off-campus.

To get video embed code:

  • Click on the "Share" button in the toolbar at the top of the video playback display
  • Click on red "Copy Embed Code".

In Blackboard:

  • Select "Build Content".
  • Click and hold on Build Content to select "Create" / "Item"

  • Enter your selected Name/Title of the video.
  • Click on "HTML" in the Tool Icons displayed for the Text Box. The HTML code view box will open.

Tips for Embedding

When embedding content, be sure to copy and paste the complete text of the embed code in the popup screen. You can check by verifying that the code starts with “<script” or “<iframe” and ends with “/script>” or “/iframe>”.  An embed code should be used only in Web pages. Other software such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email clients, and other desktop software do not support embed codes.

Each video in Films on Demand has an Embed Code that is used to embed the video in Blackboard so that students can easily access the video from both on- and off-campus.

To get video embed code:

  • Click on "Share" link just below video
  • Click on "Embed/Link".
  • Copy "Embed Code" at bottom of the box. You can also select the size of the embedded video.

  • Click "Update"
  • Click "Submit" on the Create Item page

The title of the video along with production details and running time will automatically be included in the video window in Blackboard.

Each video in Swank has an LMS Link that can be posted in Blackboard so students can easily access the video from on- and off-campus. Although this link must be posted to the HTML editor, the resulting link to the video is a URL rather than a video player. (see instructions below)

To get LMS link:

  • Click on the "Share" button to the right of the blue "Watch" button.
  • Click on the "Copy LMS Link" button in the toolbar at the bottom of the film playback display.
  • The following is an example of an LMS Link for the film, An Inconvenient Truth.

In Blackboard:

  • Select "Build Content".
  • Click and hold on Build Content to select "Create" / "Item"

  • Paste the embed code from chosen video
  • Click "Update"
  • Click "Submit" on the Create Item page

An example of the wording for the resulting link is: Watch An Inconvenient Truth.  Students will click on this link in Blackboard which results in a second link to click on. As this point, WSU faculty, staff, and students will be prompted to enter their username and password to access the video off-campus.

YouTube videos have embed codes that that be posted to Blackboard to provide students with ready access to the video from both on- and off-campus. There are two options for embedding a video in Blackboard. The first is use the embed code for a video found in YouTube to Create an Item in Blackboard. The second is to use the "Select YouTube Video" Mashup in Blackboard to search for and select a video for embedding in Blackboard. The two options are described below: 

OPTION 1: Use the embed code provided by YouTube to Create an Item in Blackboard.

To get video embed code:

  • Click on  "Share" on the right below the video playback display.
  • Click on "Embed" icon.
  • Copy the embed code.
  • The following is an example of an embed code for the video, Faces of the Asmat.
    • <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/INZUHgusI0M" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

In Blackboard:

  • Select "Build Content".
  • Click and hold on Build Content to select "Create" / "Item"
  • Enter your selected Name
  • Click on "HTML" in the Tool Icons displayed for the Text Box. The HTML code view box will open.
  • Paste the embed code from chosen video
  • Click "Update"
  • Click "Submit" on the Create Item page

OPTION 2: Use the "Select YouTube Video" Mashup in Blackboard.

In Blackboard:

  • Select "Build Content".
  • Under "Mashups" section in the second column, select "Select YouTube Video".
  • At the "Search for a YouTube" video screen, enter the title of the video you are searching for and click on "Go".
  • When you find the video you want, click on the SELECT button beneath the image of the video.
  • At the "Create Mashup Item" screen, you can add a description. You can also select how you want to view the video. Select "Embed Video". (There are also options for viewing as a Thumbnail and Text Link with Player).
  • Click "Submit".

The resulting link will look very similar to the player image you get when you embed an video using Create Item.
