Introduction to the Orientation Library Guide

We're really happy you decided to attend WSU! Everyone at University Libraries is here to help you succeed and hopefully make your life a little easier. More library resources can be found in the Student Toolbox. Not a WSU student yet? Check out our guide for Using WSU Libraries as a high school student.

If there's anything you need, please don't hesitate to get in touch with us using the information in the "Ask a Librarian" section below.

A database is an index with special tools that allow you (the researcher) to generate a relevant list of sources. SmartSearch is a discovery service that searches multiple library databases at the same time. It can find MILLIONS of results if you don't know how to run a good search. Learn more about running a good search in SmartSearch and individual library databases on the Finding Articles guide linked in the left column.

Below are a few resources you might want to try, especially if you find SmartSearch overwhelming.

Ask a Librarian

Come talk to a librarian in person at the Reference Desk on the first floor of Ablah Library.

What are some reasons to contact a librarian?

‚Äč      To find the best resources for your topic
To discuss strategies and develop skills for searching article databases and the library catalog
To identify and locate primary source materials

If a librarian is not available, you may also seek assistance from other library staff during library hours who will refer you to the appropriate librarian or department as necessary.

See the full schedule of library hours including Reference Desk, presession, intersession, and holiday hours for the main library (Ablah) and for the Chemistry and Music branch libraries. Ablah Library hours are also available on an automated phone line: 316-978-3581.
