Research Tips

When searching databases for journal articles, consider the following when entering your search terms:

1. Are there multiple terms that could be used for your topic? For example:

          illness or disease
          popular or fold medicine
          gender or women

2. Are there ways to "truncate" a term to pick up alternative spellings or singular/plural? For example:

           medic*  for medicine or medical
disease* for disease, diseases, or diseased
heal* for healing, healer, or healers

3. Examples of search statements:

           (traditional or alternative) and medicine
           culture* and (illness or disease*)
           (women or gender) and (heal*)
