Finding Books to Read for Fun!

This workshop will introduce participants to useful online resources for finding book recommendations and tools for keeping track of what you've read

NoveList

NoveList Plus is a reader's advisory database, which means it is designed to provide book recommendations for librarians and library patrons. Keep in mind that the books in the database are not linked in any way to Ablah Library's catalog, so NoveList cannot show you what books are available in Ablah Library. Once you've found a book title in NoveList you're interested in, you will have to search in the Library Catalog or other library catalogs, including the book-lending platforms available through the Kansas State Library, to find a copy you can check out.

NoveList is an excellent resource if you want to find books that fit specific criteria. Here are some of its features:

  • You can search for books using appeal terms (what readers enjoy about a book), themes (popular and recurring plot elements), time periods, genres, and specific awards (so you can see all the award winners for each one).
  • There are "Read-alike" recommendations for books (if you liked this book, you might like these), and they include descriptions of why the books are similar. They also provide author and series recommendations.
  • There are" Keeping up" pages for genres to help you get up to speed quickly.
