About LASI 170BA: Introduction to Research

LASI 170BA badge iconLASI 170 Library Research: Introduction to Research (badge) is a practical, applied class that will be useful not only throughout your career as a student, but basic research concepts are useful throughout life.

This 1/2 credit badge course will take you through the early steps in the process of writing a term paper: constructing an effective search strategy, identifying appropriate sources, and developing a topic. Register for badge classes through the WSU Workforce Education page.

This library guide includes information found on the syllabus and some course materials easily transferable to a web page. Course content is actually in Blackboard.

This course focuses on the early steps in the research process, with an emphasis on constructing an effective search strategy, identifying appropriate sources, and developing a topic appropriate for most college-level research assignments. Students will learn to ethically access, evaluate, and use information sources to accomplish a specific purpose such as preparation of a research paper or project in order to prepare for college-level research. It is recommended students take both LASI 170 BA and LASI 170 BB to better prepare for college-level research. Concepts introduced in this class will continue the concepts from LASI 170BA Library Research: Introduction.

The concepts taught in the LASI 170 badge classes are meant to be transferable and used across disciplines. In order to more thoroughly practice the concepts taught in class, students are encouraged to use topics from research papers in their other classes for assignments in these badge classes.

ACRL has recently (2016) adopted "frameworks" to define a rich, complex set of core ideas. There are six information literacy frameworks or theoretical concepts defined in the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education:

  • Authority Is Constructed and Contextual
  • Information Creation as a Process
  • Information Has Value
  • Research as Inquiry
  • Scholarship as Conversation
  • Searching as Strategic Exploration

Students explore all six core ideas in the classwork between both LASI 170BA and 170BB classes and taking both badge classes results in the equivalency of LASI 170 1-credit class.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to

  • Construct an effective search strategy in order to find information on a topic.
  • Develop a topic ino a college-level research question
  • Select relevant and appropriate information sources for a college-level paper.

photo of Angela PaulAs the Instruction and Outreach Librarian at University Libraries, one of my primary responsibilities is teaching LASI 170. I also work with most student groups not affiliated with a college, i.e. TRIO programs and International Education Office as well as area K-12 groups as crucial outreach duties. (It is mostly juniors and seniors in high school who come to do research, but 4-H clubs and elementary classes that come here for library tours are extra fun!)

You will also find me working several hours weekly at the Reference Desk, including some evening and weekend hours, so I hope I am easy for you to reach if you have questions about this class or other research projects. As a K-12 school librarian, I taught various study skills, including reading textbooks, writing class notes and taking tests.
