High School Students: National History Day Projects

Introduction

Ablah LibraryEveryone at the University Libraries is here to help you succeed and hopefully make your life a little easier. If there's anything you need, please don't hesitate to get in touch with us using the information in the "Getting Help" box on the "Research Basics" tab in this guide.

National History Day contest theme for 2021-2022 is Debate & Diplomacy in History. The district 6 contest is at Friends University (Wichita) in February, the state contest is traditionally held at Washburn University (Topeka) in April, and the national contest is held at the University of Maryland (College Park, Maryland) in June. For topic ideas go to the NHD Theme page to download the theme book and sample topics.

Kansas History Day has a webpage, too!

Fill out this form or contact Angie directly.

High school classes are welcome to come to campus and visits can be scheduled in cooperation with other departments to give students a complete campus experience. See the "Campus Experience" tab for more information.

Ablah Library has a classroom available when you schedule a time for library instruction. While in the library, students will learn how to use University Libraries resources, be able to use restricted resources while on campus, and print or e-mail articles at no charge. Students will benefit from exploring college-level resources.

Your students may checkout books as a class, if your school is in good standing with University Libraries. A form must be completed for group checkout permission. See the Library Facilities tab in this library guide for details about borrowing books as a community user.

Details can be discussed when you make the appointment. Contact Angela Paul or use this form to schedule time in Ablah Library for your class.

Visiting University Libraries

High school students are welcome to use computers in Ablah Library! We have computers located in Reserve available for two hours a day for non-Wichita State students. Non-Wichita State students must be on-campus to use electronic library materials. Check in at the Reserve Desk for a user name and password. Large groups who come in to the library with an adult supervisor may be able to get permission to use the Wichita State Student computers. Ask at the Circulation Desk or Reference Desk for details when you arrive. We also have a wireless network for guests to use with personal computer devices while on campus. The WSU guest network does not include access to WSU proprietary databases or e-books. Ask for details.

Click here for published policies for the Computer Use Policy, Library Facilities Use Policy and Guidelines for Community Groups.

Computer printing is 7¢ per page. Printing is web-based using PaperCut. Non-students will need to ask for help with printing from the Community User Computers. Printing is free in room 217 Ablah during library instruction.

High school students and other community users may get his or her own WSU library card. High school groups may also check out as a group (use the form below).

You are always welcome to ask for an in-person tour, but we do have other ways for you to become familiar with the University Libraries. In addition to the self-paced photo tour below, you can find a virtual tour here.
