This page will help you learn about crediting external sources, such as journal articles and books, in your research papers and research projects. Each tutorial listed in this box starts with the same 18 slides about the reference list or citation list. This first section identifies citations and why they are used in research papers. It also discusses common elements of all citations and reference lists.
The second part of each tutorial goes in depth about a specific citation style. The basic pattern for journal articles, newspaper articles and books are provided, as well as examples and a practice activity for each type of citation. A PowerPoint is also provided based on each tutorial as this program is easy to use to create a handout. Find the handout in the "Resources" button at the top right corner of the tutorial.
These tutorials are created in Articulate Storyline. This software allows the browser window to adjust to the size of your computer. Therefore, the citations do not all appear to be nicely formatted with hanging indentation, which is required for a correctly formatted reference list. The practice activities may also not have correct hanging indentation. However, more important than the paragraph formatting is the placement of each piece of information in the citation. Please be aware of this limitation.

As you learn in this tutorial, CSE requires journal abbreviations to be used in the citations. One-word titles are not abbreviated, but other titles must use ISSN standard word abbreviations. These abbreviations are also found on the CSE Quick Guide site.
