Accessibility and Inclusiveness at University Libraries

University Libraries has collections and services for all students, faculty and staff.

Quiet (and not-so-quiet) Spaces

Do you like a bit of noise? Do you prefer to work in a quiet space? No matter where you fit on the noise spectrum, Ablah Library has a space where you will feel comfortable.

Ablah Library has no formal rules about noise except on the third floor. The rest of the library requires only that visitors be respectful of the people around them. In other words, what is "acceptable" noise is subjective and varies all the time. The main floor commons area and the second floor next to the balcony are usually noisy spaces.

For Peace and Quiet

  • Designated quiet floor (3rd floor).
  • Focus rooms.
  • Group study rooms (work with up to six classmates).
  • Tables and chairs are arranged along the outside walls and within the book stacks on the 2nd floor and lower level.
  • Modulate your own environment (see the Avoiding Distractions page on this guide).

For a Bit of Noise

  • Focus rooms (make your own noise without disturbing others).
  • Borrow a white noise machine or fan from the Circulation Desk.
  • Use headphones (borrow headphones or purchase earbuds from the Circulation Desk).
  • Main floor commons area and the second floor balcony are usually noisy spaces.
