EndNote - Citation Management Software

Cite-While-You-Write

EndNote works with Microsoft Word (and other writing software) by creating an EndNote tab in the application. This feature, called Cite-While-You-Write, makes it easy to add source citations in the text and also manages the reference list at the end of the document simultaneously. You can insert a citation from your EndNote library in whatever style you wish (there are hundreds available) and EndNote will format it and number the references automatically. If a desired citation style is not in the Style list, it may be in the larger list in EndNote, and if not it can likely be downloaded from EndNote.com.

If you find a change is necessary to a reference, it must be made within EndNote itself, then you can see the changes reflected in EndNote by using the Update Citations and Bibliography button. You can also insert page numbers, format the References heading, and other similar features using the Edit & Manage Citation(s) button.

Annotated Bibliographies

You can paste references into Word for a bibliography or annotated bibliography by 1. selecting the desired citation style in Endnote:

Then, 2. by selecting the desired references in EndNote, and copying formatted references and pasting into Word.

This method will not link the Word document to EndNote, so it can be freely edited without your changes needing to be done in EndNote, which makes it ideal for an annotated bibliography or any assignment where your text may be interspersed with the references.
