Where Can I Search?

Trademark Search System

  • Provides access to more than pending, registered, and dead federal trademarks
  • This is the same resource that the trademark examiners use and it allows very complex searches
  • You can search logos (images) using design search codes, which can be identified in the Design Search Code Manual
  • There is also a search tool for filtering and sorting of information to find decisions more easily on expungement and reexamination proceedings and administrative and sanctions orders.

WIPO "Global Brand Database"

  • 13.3+ million international brands and trademarks, including 7.5+ million US trademarks and brands

List of all states' Secretary of State websites

  • Search each state's Secretary of State website to see if the mark is being used in another state

Office of the Secretary of State (Kansas)

  • Search for trademarks registered in Kansas.

Search Engine (Google, Bing, Yahoo, Safari, etc.)

  • Search to see if anyone is using the name in business. Trademark registration is not a requirement and some businesses may have protection over their name by their use in commerce and may be entitled to common law trademark protections.

ICANN WHOIS

  • Search for registered domain names. This may help you determine whether or not a domain name is taken for the business name you intend to use.
