Open Access Publishing Deals

Read & Publish subscriptions are deals where a library's subscription to a journal package includes both the traditional right to read journal articles and a new component allowing authors to publish Open Access (OA) articles without paying an OA publishing fee. The OA fees are covered by the library's subscription.

Current Read & Publish Subscriptions

  • Association for Computing Machinery (ACM):  Research articles will be published OA when the corresponding author is affiliated with WSU. This deal is part of ACM's strategy to transition all ACM publications to OA. It covers articles submitted beginning October 2023. See the ACM Open page for more information about ACM's OA Model, including the Author Experience and a list of Eligible Publications.
  • Springer: Corresponding authors affililated with WSU will have the option to publish research articles OA in hybrid journals. This deal covers articles submitted and accepted between January 2024 and December 2027. For more information, including a list of eligible journals, see Springer's page for the Lyrasis consortium.

FAQ

  1. How does the publisher know I'm entitled to OA under the Libraries' deal? When submitting, the corresponding author needs to use @wichita.edu email and list Wichita State University as the institutional affiliation. The publisher's submission software checks eligibility for open access publication under all participating library subscription deals.
  2. Does the Libraries cover OA fees for other journals? No, the library doesn't have money to pay OA fees for faculty.
  3. Will the Libraries do more Read & Publish subscription deals? If a consortium we participate in negotiates a deal, we will participate if the Read & Publish deal does not cost more than we would pay for a traditional subscription. Any new deals will probably be announced early in Spring semester, since most subscriptions are on a calendar year basis.
  4. Can my students publish OA under these deals? The publisher software looks for institutional emails and institutional affiliation of the corresponding author. If the corresponding author uses @wichita.edu as the email address and selects Wichita State University as their institutional affiliation, the article is eligible.
