MLA stands for Modern Languages Association. The MLA Style Manual is often used for formatting and citing references when writing papers in the liberal arts and humanities.

Some Definitions:
Citations: The basic and necessary elements of information needed to find a work (title, author, publication date, and publication source).
Citation Style: The style dictates the order and format of the citation elements.
Endnotes: References placed at the end of the paper, but before the 'Works Cited' section.
Footnotes: References placed at the bottom of each page (uses superscript numbers)
In-text Citations: A reference to quoted or summarized materials used in a paper, with extra brief information placed within parentheses.
Works Cited: A bibliography, or a list of all citations referred to in your paper, usually at the end.
Annotated Bibliography: List of the citations along with a brief summary and assessment of each work.
Citation Styles:
APA: Published by the American Psychological Association- used by the social sciences, education, and general sciences.
MLA: Published by the Modern Language Association - used by the humanities, such as literature and history.
Chicago: Published by the University of Chicago Press - used in the arts, history, philosophy, and religion.
CSE (CBE): Published by the Council of Science Editors - used in the sciences.
