WSU Libraries Topic Guide: Free E-Book Resources

This guide provides free online e-book resources, and it is divided by three parts including online course materials, e-Textbooks and other eBooks. Part I consists of free online courses available at various universities. Part II contains comprehensive sites of textbooks and lecture notes, while textbooks under specific subjects are listed under part III. Part III has other eBooks further divided by subjects and formats.

American Memory  

A multimedia collection from the National Digital Library of unique, primary source materials (including photographs, manuscripts, rare books, maps) in U.S. history and culture. Created by the Library of Congress.


Audio books, Music, and More!  

A collection of thousands of digital audio books, digital e-books, digital music, and digital videos shared with libraries throughout Kansas.  Browse and search both fiction and non-fiction titles in several genres.  Using the Overdrive software, which is free, download to your computer, transfer to a portable device, or burn onto a CD.  The loan period is 14 days for music and books and 7 days for videos with a maximum of 10 items being checked out at one time.  Holds can be placed on items that are currently checked out.  This is open to Kansas residents only and you must have a myWSUid or a Kansas State Library Card.

A collection of about 100 reference books, poetry, fiction, and non-fiction. Featuring such works as Gray's Anatomy, Bartlett's Familiar Quotations, Strunk's Elements of Style.


Electronic Text Center Collection  

A collection of approximately 70,000 on- and off-line humanities texts in thirteen languages with more than 350,000 related images (book illustrations, covers, manuscripts, newspaper pages, museum objects, etc.). Developed by University of Virginia.

 

Google Books

Enables users to search the full-text of millions of books.  However, not all of the books are available in full-text -- some are, but most are not. There are varying levels of access to the full-text of each book. The books in Google Book Search come primarily from two sources: publishers and libraries. 

 

Humanities Text Initiative  

A collection of literary, historical, and religious texts developed by the University of Michigan. Includes projects such as the American Verse project and the Making of America.

 

Library of American Civilization Titles

A collection of online titles freely available on the Internet from the Library of American Civilization microfiche collection held by Quinnipiac University, Hamden CT. Derived from online titles maintained by the University of Pennsylvania at their Online Books Page (see below).

Project Gutenberg  

A collection of approximately 2,500 classics including Shakespeare, Poe, Dante, Lewis Carroll. Browsable by author or title. Texts are downloaded from FTP sites.

Salem Literature is a robust online database that includes the complete content of printed reference sets. This includes:  Musicians and Composers of the 20th Century, Great Lives from History, and Historical Encyclopedia of American Business.
